Working with parents of children with developmental disabilities, especially on the Autism spectrum, has given me a perspective of the much-needed support these parents need after a diagnosis has been made. Many stressors are experienced by parents and other family members as there is a lack of guidance for parents, and therapeutic services such as behavioral services are only offered to the children. In contrast, parents’ well-being is not addressed. Studies have shown that when parents receive counseling services individually or as a family, their well-being increases, and their risk of experiencing anxiety and depression decreases.
I offer both individual and couples counseling services for parents of children with developmental disabilities to help them navigate the emotional, practical, and relational challenges they may face. I believe that having a non-judgmental space for parents to express their feelings, fears, and concerns can be incredibly valuable in helping them feel understood and less alone in their struggles.
